2019 legislation priorities for NFOA

New bill Introductions

The 106th Nebraska Legislature has convened and we now see what gun bills have been introduced.  We don’t expect much of anything to get traction this session, but we do expect bills that are hostile to your firearms rights to get through committee.

The Judiciary committee is now chaired by Senator Steve Lathrop who has a history to opposing individual Liberty.  He was previously on the Judiciary Committee.  Steve was term limited after serving 8 years, and after sitting out 4 years is back.  The rest of the Judiciary Committee is not looking friendly either, with many familiar anti-gun faces.

Safe Storage Task Force Update

Mayor Chris Beutler announced the creation of a Child Access to Firearms/Safe Storage Task Force. Beutler asked the task force to examine strategies to reduce access to firearms by children and to increase the safe storage of firearms in the community. The “concept” originally put forward by Lincoln City Council Member,Leirion Gaylor Baird, representatives of Nebraskans against Gun Violence began testifying in support of a task force during the open microphone sessions of the City Council. The NFOA was not asked to participate in the Task Force, and we were concerned during the preliminary press coverage that no firearms experts from any of the many recognized organizations within our state had a seat at the table.  We are now aware that a Lincoln Range owner will be participating, and in a more recent update, there will be representation by the local NRA rep on the task force. After many of our members responded to a call to action in our online community,  we still have many of original concerns unaddressed and questions unanswered. We will continue to watch this closely.
